Friday Deal of the Week

In our effort to get you guys the best deal on the best games we will have a new feature, The Friday Deal of the Week, that will help you find some of the best games around for incredibly low prices.

Let's get straight to savings yo!

The Friday Deal of the Week for 2/19/2010:

Halo Wars (Xbox 360)
Price: 9.99
Where: Microcenter
Availability: 2/19 - 2/21 while supplies last.

This is an in-store deal only.

Halo Wars is a completely different take on the Halo Universe.  The action shifts from FPS to RTS (Real-time Strategy).  The game garnered impressive reviews when it made its debut last year.  It tells the story of Planet Harvest, which is one of the first human colonies to fall to the Covenant.  With the release of Halo Reach around the corner this is a great game to flesh out more of the story for any Halo fan.

Do yourself a favor, for the price of a burrito pick up this game this weekend.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier

The news of a new Ghost Recon game, although long expected, was officially announced yesterday.  Today brough the first teaser trailer with it.  Go check it out over at Ign.

I've been a fan of the series for a long time.  I remember playing the first one on my computer, and then having nightly co-op games when the title first appeared on the original Xbox.  What made the game so great in it's early stages was the fact that you could team up with your buddies and play a real tactical shooter together.

The series then moved to the Next-gen consoles.  It also changed from being simply Ghost Recon to Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter.  Both games on the 360 earned rave reviews around the industry.  The multiplayer experience was solid and the graphics were truly something to marvel at.  Some say that the Advanced Warfighter was one of the first truly "next-gen" games graphically.

Of course right now there are more questions than answers.  Will the gameplay stay true to past Ghost Recon titles?  Will the game still be in the 3rd person (1.5 really) or will it make the move to first person.  Will it stay true to it's root or try to compete with the Call of Duty Juggernaut?

All we know for sure is that the multiplayer beta will come free with the purchase of the new Splinter Cell game.  Which sucks because now I have to spend $65 to get my hands on the game.  Arghhh.

We'll send more updates your way once they become available, but keep an eye out for this title.  It could be the sleeper hit of the year.

Red Faction: Guerrilla $12.99

Truly one of the better games of 2009.  Red Faction: Guerrilla is a technical marvel that nobody should miss.  The destruction elements that we were first introduced to us on the PS2 for Red Faction 1 are back, and better than ever.

This new Red Faction moves the action from the first person perspective into the third person, ala Grand Theft Auto.  What sets it apart from being just another sandbox game is the fact that you can destroy almost anything in the game.  You can take out a few support beams of a nearby building and watch the entire structure fall into itself.  You can also launch your car off a cliff and have it crash through a wall, taking out anyone that gets in your way in the process.  The physics are truly astounding.

The single player is a very solid and robust experience while the multiplayer can be quite fun at times also.  I should throw out a caution that the multiplayer at this point is being dominated by the few who still play it, so you might receive a rough welcome.

Here's the best part.  Gamefly overstocked on this title when it first game out and they are getting rid of copies for $12.99.  For the money, you will not find a better deal online.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Demo (Xbox Live)

It's been exactly one week since the release of the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 demo on Xbox Live.  Since then it has shot up to number 3 on the Live most played titles list.  That's right, only Modern Warfare 2 and Halo 3 have more unique players playing than this demo.  After spending a week playing it is easy to see why.  Before we delve into the details let's take a look at what the demo provides, which isn't all that much.

The demo is a multiplayer demo only.  You only have the option of playing one mode on one map.  That mode is called "Rush" and you play it on the Harbor map.  It's a snow covered level taking place in...yep a Harbor.  You do have the option of choosing one of the 4 classes, but those have been restricted quite heavily as well.  You start with one weapon, and have the ability to unlock one more for each class.  None of the three "perks" are available for the demo so there aren't many options as far as customization goes.  The weapon restrictions do not bother me, but I wish they would've let us take a look at some of the perks.  I have a feeling that they will greatly alter the way the game is played, and it would have been nice to know what, if any, difference they would make.  The Harbor map in itself is quite big and offers opportunities for all types of combat.  The game mode locks parts of the map until the Attacking team is able to destroy two objectives.  Then a new section will be unlocked and the fighting will move there.  This is quite a clever concept and keeps the action from spreading out too far, which would become a problem with maps of this size.

As I alluded to earlier there are two teams in the Rush game mode.  One team is tasked with destroying objectives while the other team tries to defend them.  The attacking team usually gets a slight advantage as far as vehicles are concerned.  If used correctly vehicles have the ability to inflict an incredible amount of damage on the targets and the personel defending it.  It's very rare that a lone attacker can infiltrate the base and blow up an objective all by himself.  Which leads me into another great addition to the game and that is the Squad option.  Right off the bat you're given the choice to join a squad.  You also have the option to assemble your own squad pre-game and then look for games from the lobby.  Being in a squad is where you truly feel like you can change the outcome of the battle.  This is mainly due to the fact that you are able to spawn on your squad mates location once you have died and sat out for 10 seconds.  Without a squad buddy you will be forced to enter the game at one of the edges of the combat zone, and your combat effectivness takes a hit as it will usually take you a little bit of time before you can reach the action.  The matches are 12 v 12 but being part of a squad makes it seem much more intimate.  In all the time I've spend playing I've never seen more than 4 or 5 people roll-up together.  It's extremely well done, and makes it feel like you're being part of a much larger battle while still keeping you focused on one area or one objective on the map.

The game itself is gorgeous.  The detail in the environments, the character models, the vehicles and far spanning vistas are impressive.  In the horizon you will see boat docks, a city, and vast mountain ranges.  All of it is quite spectacular.  Of course the original Bad Company was known for its destructibility.  The sequel definitly improves upon that aspect of the game and it is still a major strategical component.

The sound effects are incredible.  There's a noticeable difference between firing a weapon outside as opposed to inside of a building.  Tank shells will explode almost constantly and remind you that heavy artilery deaths are around every corner.

The demo is very limited, but it's done a great job serving as an appetizer of what will probably be one of the very best shooters of this year.

Keep an eye out for our full review shortly after the game hits retail on March 2nd.

The Journey Begins...

Welcome

First time here...ME TOO!

2010 has gotten off to an incredible start, and it looks like the year will deliver some of the best games yet. Since we're just starting out there is a good chance that we'll just take a quick look back at 2009, and some of the great games that came out during last year. But have no fear, as soon as the big titles drop we will be there to review them shortly after. Since we are at our humble beginnings you can expect "First Impressions" before we dive into full fledged reviews.

The site will also be under heavy construction for the first couple of weeks as we get our feet wet. One day, we'll look back at this posts as the start of something. Whether that will be of something great, or something aweful remains to be seen. Do pop in from time to time. As we told you, we're not on the take yet, so all of our reviews and impressions are coming from someone like you...a fellow gamer who pays for their own games, and has a limited funds to do so :)

Beyond impressions and reviews, we'll try to point you to the best places on the web to save on your games. Because after all...the deals are out there. All of us here at Cereal Gamer rarely pay full price for our games. What can we say we're cheap. But our lack of funds might save you a couple of bucks too.

We love discussions, we love it when you show US where we can save cash too. Don't be holdin out on us man...seriously.

So that's pretty much it. Welcome. Let's get this show on the road.

Sincerely,

Cereal Gamer
